As snow has finally touched down in New York City for the first time in 2 years I decided that it would be good to show how bad snow really has been in New York, even though this storm is minor and will not be anything close to what you are about to see there is finally snow in the city, schools are closed and sleds are out.
In the 2016 winter storm, Jonas battered the East Coast with heavy rains, strong wind, and of course massive snow totals. New York experienced major transportation delays with this storm as bridges, tunnels, roads, and public transportation were all disrupted. The two-day event left snow totals measuring 27.2 inches in Central Park. There were also 3 deaths recorded in connection to the storm from people shoveling snow.
This was a pretty big event for New York City, not only because of the snow from this storm but just going off of the fact this was part of one of the biggest snow events in our country's history. Dubbed the "Snowmaggedon" at the time the 2 storms that slammed the US left a dusting on the big apple at first then storm number 2 swooped in and dumped about 2 feet on the city streets.
The blizzard of 1969 was significant not only because of the 20 inches of snow dropped on the city but also because the mayor of New York, John Lindsay. The storm ended up bringing the city to a screeching halt as thousands of cars got stuck on the Tappan Zee Bridge and New York Thruway. More people were also stuck at JFK as parked planes served as shelter for the people who were stranded. The real issue of this storm though was the people who were trapped in their cars an estimated 94 people died from Carbon Monoxide poisoning as doctors couldn't leave their homes to answer emergency calls.
This storm which was more like a Nor'Easter ended up giving New York City the worst of it's wrath as it ended up dropping about 27 inches of snow onto the Big Apple. Meteorologists also measured winds at around 20-30 miles an hour during the storm to make matters worse.
Nicknamed the Great White Hurricane, the Great Blizzard of 1888 was arguably the biggest snow event in our country's history. There were over 200 deaths recorded in NYC alone from this storm as it left people buried in snowdrifts in Manhattan.
