Weather happening around the country
Above is an image of the Maui Wild Fires that are ravaging through the island causing thousands to evacuate
The devastating photo above depicts the wildfires that are raging through Maui right now, which is one of the islands in Hawaii. Thousands have had to evacuate the Island already from the blaze. There have been reports also of people jumping into the ocean to escape the fires. While there isn't any information that I can find from the media about a direct cause of the fire, the strength and the reason the fires have spread so rapidly have been attributed to Hurricane Dora and an area of high pressure. According to a video done by Ari Salasari of the weather channel because of Dora and a high-pressure system that is hovering north of Hawaii ever caught in between these two things will experience strong winds and Hawaii is that thing caught in between these two weather elements. Even though Hawaii isn't getting hit by Hurricane Dora it is getting enough of its winds to whip up these brush fires and cause them to spread. According to an article written by Hawaii News Now, wind gusts from 50 mph to 80 mph on the island. Also according to the same article, these windy conditions have caused schools to be closed and have caused power outages not only on Maui but also on Oahu another Hawaiian island. One thing that I did wonder about these fires was how they were affected by climate change. A lot of the wildfires in the U.S. and around the world have been linked to this and there was evidence to show this in these Maui fires. An article written by US News, states that climate change in many parts of the world is increasing vegetation dryness which in turn is one of the leading causes of a lot of these fires. Also, an issue that is one of the most persisting issues in climate change, is that all of these hurricanes are becoming much stronger and this is happening more frequently. This is causing extreme weather events such as this one to happen more frequently.
