For my 5th blog post I wanted to look at the 5 craziest or just most signifigant weather events that have happened this summer.
#5 The Canadian Wildfire Smoke terrorizes New York City.
The Canadian wildfires that burned through Northeastern Canada this year weren't a first at all. The smoke that came with it though was. Due to the timing of some unfortunate winds the smoke from the fires brought awful haze into New York City and other areas of the northeast. The haze was so bad in NYC that Governor Kathy Hochul had to declare the poor air quality, "an emergency crisis".
#4 Slow-moving storms flood Northeast killing 8 in New York, Vermont, and Pennsylvania
A slow moving system with the help of the Greenland block and a high-pressure system above the Great Lakes allowed rain that the northeast hasn't seen since Hurricane Irene and flooding the northeast hasn't seen since Superstorm Sandy. These floods were most destructive in Vermont where they put the entire capitol of Montpellier underwater and killed 1.
#3 Hurricane Idalia became the costliest U.S. weather disaster of the year.
Hurricane Idalia made landfall in Florida's "Big Bend" near Keaton Beach around 75 miles southwest of Florida's Capital Tallahassee on Wednesday, August 30 at 7:45 am. The storm surge during the storm was 12-16 feet high where it made landfall. Flooding levels in the Big Bend area were forecasted to be above 6 feet. Three deaths have been associated with the storm and it is estimated to have caused 18-20 billion dollars in damages.
#2 July 2023 is the hottest month ever recorded
Heatwaves spread across the world in July this year causing a lot of chaos in parts of the U.S. and Europe this summer. The heatwaves caused many fatalities and interfered with people's lives in a huge way as it was too hot to be outside for even a couple of minutes for some people. The heatwaves were a scary reminder of how bad the Earth's environment is right now and where we are at in terms of the climate crisis.
#1 Wildfires in Hawaii claimed the lives of 97 people
In early August fires roared across the Hawaiian island of Maui. The fires were thought to have started because of a transformer malfunction in Maui. They were mainly fueled though by Hurricane Dora. This was a major hurricane that sat off the coast of Maui for a long time It was so big its winds reached Hawaii with the consistency and strength to spread the fires around the island. The surprise of the fire combined with the lack of land space was a huge cause of the 97 fatalities.
